Why is my boat chalky?

Show your boat some love!

If your boat's surface is looking chalky, it's typically due to oxidation or the breakdown of the gel coat.

Over time, the sun's UV rays, saltwater, and other environmental factors can break down the boat’s gel coat. This causes the surface to lose its luster and can result in a chalky appearance. Gel coats are typically a type of resin that provides a smooth, shiny finish to fiberglass boats.

  1. Environmental Exposure: Boats that are kept in the water or exposed to harsh weather conditions (like saltwater, intense sun, or rain) are more prone to oxidation. The salt can strip protective wax coatings, leaving the gel coat more vulnerable to damage.
  2. Lack of Maintenance: If your boat hasn’t been regularly cleaned, waxed, or buffed, it can lead to a build-up of chalky residue. The gel coat needs regular maintenance to maintain its shine and protective layer.

Here’s how you can use Dulon Marine Products to tackle the chalky look:

1. Clean and Prepare the Surface

  • Before using any polishing or waxing products, start by cleaning your boat’s surface with Dulon Marines PreDulon. This product is designed to remove dirt, grime, and light oxidation, providing a smooth surface for further treatment.
  • Pair this with a Deckmate Scrubbing Brush DM110-140 and Handle DM454-456 to ensure the surface is cleaned thoroughly with no scratches.
  • After applying the cleaner, thoroughly rinse and dry the surface with a Deckmate Drying Towel DM320-321. This ensures that no cleaner residue is left, which could interfere with the next steps.

2. Buff the Oxidized Surface

  • After cleaning, use Dulon Marine Poly Polish. This compound is specifically designed to remove heavier oxidation and restore the shine to your boat’s gel coat.
  • Apply the compound with a soft cloth or a mechanical buffer, working in small sections at a time. Use moderate pressure to help work the compound into the surface.
  • After buffing each section, wipe off the residue with a clean microfiber towel.

3. Apply a Protective Finish

  • Once the surface is polished, apply Dulon Marine 1 & 2 to seal the gel coat and protect it from future oxidation and environmental damage. The wax will give the surface a glossy finish and help prevent the chalky appearance from returning.
  • Apply the wax using a clean, soft cloth or a waxing pad, working in small sections.
  • Let the wax dry to a haze, then buff it off with a clean cloth. The result will be a smooth, shiny, and protected surface.

4. Regular Maintenance

We recommend the above be done every 12 months. By incorporating Dulon Marine Products into your boat care routine, you can effectively remove the chalky appearance caused by oxidation and maintain a shiny, protective finish for your boat.
